Study Shows Late Introduction of Solid Foods Associated with Increased Risk of Allergic Sensitization by Age 5

A study published in the “Pediatrics” the official journal of the American Association of Pediatrics shows that late introduction of solid foods during infancy is directly related to the likelihood a food or inhalant sensitivity develops by age 5. The study involved 994 children with susceptibility to type 1 diabetes for whom information on breastfeeding, age at the introduction of solid foods, and allergen-specific immunoglobulin E levels at 5 years was available (using data from The Finnish Type 1 Diabetes Prediction and Prevention Nutrition Study). The Holidays are fast approaching, and it’s that time of year again… my sneezing, itchy eyes, and runny nose are in full effect. From the burning of artificially scented candles to the smell of real Christmas trees, I feel like my sinuses are being assaulted at every turn. I have suffered from allergies and asthma since I was a little girl, and the holidays have always been a difficult time of year for me. If you add seasonal colds and flu to my allergies and asthma, it adds up to headaches and chronic fatigue, not to mention a constant feeling of stress.
