The cause of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is still unclear. Recent research indicates that there is a growing body of evidence showing that IBS is influenced by psychological stressors. A study published by the Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment Journal surveyed sixty six patients with IBS. Results showed that more than 80% of the patients reported having had their bowel problems provoked by distress, prior to their IBS diagnosis. Pain in female patients was reported more frequent, but both genders described the positive association between emotional stressors and their symptoms. Study participants were also evaluated using the NEO Five-Factor Inventory. This 60-item questionnaire, which usually takes 10-15 minutes to complete, measures five personality factors. Questionnaire results of study participants with IBS showed a significant higher level of “neuroticism” and aggression. Neuroticism is a personality trait characterized by overstated reactivity to physiological changes and unstable emotions.
