- by Dr. Ray Nannis, BioVeda Health and Wellness Center of Richardson, TX

Chiropractic care is often thought of only in terms of relief from a back or neck injury, perhaps suffered in an auto accident or in lifting a too-heavy weight improperly. But the plain truth is that case studies suggest many different health problems may respond to a regular program of chiropractic care. According to a recent case study, the condition known as fibromyalgia, a neurological disorder characterized by pain and a lack of coordination in muscle movements, was resolved following a regimen of chiropractic adjustments.

“There are certainly no guarantees with any course of care,” said Dr. Ray Nannis, a Richardson-based chiropractor who strives to keep current with the latest research and developments in health and wellness. “And every case depends on the specific factors associated with that case. But we see, from time to time, individual case studies that give rise to hope for many.”

Dr. Curtis Fedorchuk, the Georgia chiropractor who conducted the study, says fibromyalgia is a widespread pain syndrome of unknown cause affecting an estimated 1% to 4% of the U.S. population. It is diagnosed based on two factors being present: (1) pain lasting more than 3 months in multiple upper and lower body locations; and (2) pain created by applying less than 4 kilograms of pressure to 11 of 18 trigger points in the body.

“Common symptoms include persistent fatigue, problems with sleeping, and depression,” said Dr. Nannis, “and women are 10-20 times more likely to be affected than men.”

The 40-year old female in this particular case had been experiencing fibromyalgia symptoms for eight years and had been taking both prescription and non-prescription medications, with little success in treating the problem or its symptoms. The patient underwent a thorough chiropractic exam, and a trans-neuronal dysfunction to the right cerebellum was noted and a diagnosis made. Subluxations were also noted as a result of the examination.

“A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that disturbs normal nervous system function,” said Dr. Nannis. “Many chiropractors, including myself, have non-intrusive technology allowing them to conduct Surface Electromyography (sEMG) and thermal imaging tests to assist in locating where such conditions exist.”

According to the case study, reported last fall in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research,

This patient received chiropractic care for . . . nine months. Objective, reliable, and valid findings of subluxation reduction were demonstrated through radiographic analysis, sEMG, and thermography readings. This patient’s reduction in subluxations correlated with increased quality of life in seven of eight measured domains of wellness . . . . This patient also experienced reduction in her fibromyalgia-related symptoms of widespread pain, fatigue, depression, and headaches.

“This is just one case study,” Dr. Nannis emphasized, “and more studies are needed before any absolute conclusions can be drawn. But as chiropractors, we believe that the nervous system is the master-controller of the systems and functions of the human body. It stands to reason, then, that improvement in nervous system function, which is what we do as chiropractors, can have a beneficial effect on overall health.”

The reduction of stress on the autonomic nervous system (ANS), which controls the body’s “fight or flight” response, can directly improve overall health and wellness. According to the AMA, stress causes or contributes to between 80 and 85% of all human illness.

L.A.S.E.R. Therapy

A technique rooted in biofeedback, and combined with L.A.S.E.R (Light and Sound Energy Relaxation) therapy, newly-coined by BioAllergenix, offers stress reduction. While not treating specific conditions L.A.S.E.R. therapy can alleviate a myriad of symptoms. Adam Silbersweig, President, states: “L.A.S.E.R therapy offers hope for those suffering from chronic health issues caused by the nervous system reacting inappropriately to harmless substances, providing a fast, effective and non-invasive approach to gain control of stressful physiological responses. Falling outside the scope of classical medical diagnosis and treatment, it is a technique which recognizes the advantages that holistic approaches offer as effective alternatives to promote health and wellness.”

While there may be great temptation for people to label symptoms associated with conditions such as an allergies, asthma, IBS, CFS or even Autism, the underlying trigger may be a combination of inappropriate responses to harmless substances placing unnecessary stress on the ANS. If that stress can be reduced or eliminated, it is believed that the symptoms sometimes attributed to these conditions can also be reduced or eliminated. L.A.S.E.R Therapy may impact the regulation of arousal within the autonomic nervous system, resulting in the brain’s proper self regulation of its own functions.

The BAX-3000 by BioAllergenix is the only fully-automated L.A.S.E.R (Light and Sound Energy Relaxation Therapy) system that combines neurological (SSSR) substance specific stress reduction and environmental substance exposure to reduce or eliminate inappropriate ANS Mediated Responses. Through the SSSR process, relaxation training triggers an endorphin release in the brain, providing a calming effect on the nervous system. The patient is simultaneously exposed to stimuli which represent stress-inducing environmental substances. The BAX-3000 therapy teaches the ANS to retain normal stress levels during real world substance exposure.

Case Study: L.A.S.E.R Therapy and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

By increasing the ability of the brain to self-regulate via the elimination of a stress response, L.A.S.E.R therapy may increase the ability to manage the challenges of the person seriously impaired by the effects of CFS. CFS is defined by the symptom of incapacitating fatigue which is not improved by rest. It is worsened by physical or mental activity and is crippling for the sufferer. Other symptoms associated with this syndrome are cognitive dysfunction; malaise lasting more than 24 hours following physical or mental exercise; unrefreshing sleep; joint and muscle pain; headaches; tender cervical or axillary lymph nodes and sore throat.

In November 2008, a subject in their late 30s came to Dr. McKenna suffering from what was self reported to be CFS. For the previous 15 years, the subject reported having slept 12 hours a day while experiencing chronic joint pain in the shoulders and knees. The subject also reported chronic heartburn; dark circles around the eyes; hay fever; and dry skin.

The subject had consulted with other medical practitioners, undergone blood tests, and experimented with a number of OTC medications – with little result. He sought out Dr. McKenna for chiropractic care to relieve the joint pain; however, after review of his symptoms, Dr. McKenna suggested that L.A.S.E.R therapy would be appropriate. While not attempting to diagnose or treat CFS, Dr. McKenna believed through SSSR the subject’s symptoms could be alleviated.

Assessment with the BAX-3000 identified heightened ANS stress reactions to coffee, chocolate, eggs, milk and wheat. The subject, a waiter in a Spanish restaurant, was in direct contact with these substances. At the end of each shift, he would be unnaturally exhausted. Further exploration revealed the patient was not eating the foods, but the mere smell and touch of the items induced a stress response.

Dr. McKenna initiated weekly therapy with the BAX-3000 starting in November 2008, with completion of patient protocols in February 2009. Dr. McKenna verified and documented the subjects reported elimination of dark circles around the eyes and hay fever after 3 sessions; heartburn and joint pain after 8 sessions (as verified by x-rays) and the elimination of the skin irritation after 12 sessions. The subject reported increased energy and an ability to sustain normal daily activity following 7-8 hours of sleep. As of May 2009, the subject reports to be symptom free without additional therapy.
